Be a Missionary!

The prerequisite to becoming the Lord's missionary is not crossing the sea, but seeing the cross! We must die to ourselves and pick up our cross dailyEvery time we walk out of our front door, we are entering the mission field!

My wife and I have a sign inside our home over the front door which reads, 'Now Entering The Mission Field.'  We made this as a sobering reminder that we are called to lay down our lives and be His missionaries to a lost and dying world every day!  The apostle Paul obeyed this call faithfully and said, "We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed - always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.  For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh." (2 Cor 4:8-11)  As the beautiful worship song says, "Oh the wonderful cross, oh the wonderful cross, bids me come and die to find that I (and others) may truly live."

Every day is filled with opportunities to die to ourselves that someone else may have the life of Christ.  We only need to pray and ask the Lord to open our eyes and help us to be willing to do His will.  Our Lord has commanded us to be His missionaries by going into all the world and preaching the gospel to every creature.  He has also given us the power to obey His command by the Holy Spirit who lives in us.  In Acts 1:8, Jesus told His disciples, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

To be the Lord's missionary we need to start right where we are.  The Lord may call us to go to another country, but we are called to be His missionaries today!  One thing that has really helped our family to be more missionary minded even if were not in another country has been going on what we call a 'Mission 1:8' (refering to Acts 1:8).  First, we wake up early on a Saturday morning and pick an 'end of the world' location that is within a day trip's driving distance. Then we pray and start heading in that direction stoping four times along the way to preach the gospel as the Holy Spirit leads.  Usually we will try to find a busy intersection where we can park and preach the gospel at the same corner.  We consider these four stops our Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and end of the earth, thus the name, 'Mission 1:8'.  This has been a great way for our family to magnify the Lord and exalt His name together!

Of course there are many other ways of reaching out to others with the gospel (1Cor 9:22), but I pray that this will encourage you to seek the Lord on how you can be His missionary every day!

God bless you as you seek Him!
